My daily routine has changed drastically since the onset of this global crisis. From the way I start my day to my commitment-free evenings, I have fewer places I’m required to be and more time for contemplation. A fairly regimented person, even my morning coffee isn’t what it was. A long-time lover of locally roasted coffee beans, I’ve stopped making coffee with tap water. In fact, in light of better health practices, my morning cup o’ joe is now made with spring water and I have two words for you… game changer.
Back in early March, when the first North American cases of COVID were publicized, when events and leagues were cancelled, and the Canadian government suggested it was time to return home, I decided to make micro changes in my daily habits. Seeing the way the crisis around the world was affecting humanity, I began an evaluation starting with the number of hours I spend sitting at a desk, to the time and quality of my sleep, and even, the water I drink.
A consumer of information, when the news of a global pandemic set in, I decided to be even more cautious with the content I allowed into my energy field. First I limited the amount of time I spent on social media, who I followed and what I binged on Netflix. It was there, on my couch with a fondness for Zach Efron that I found Down to Earth; a brilliant docuseries which changed the way I looked at various aspects of my health, but especially the quality of water I consume. In fact, it was while watching episode 2, set in France, that I recalled the advice I’ve been given many years ago by a naturopath. Dr. Mary-Anne Hembroff of the Nature Doctors shared with me that drinking water with a high alkaline level and natural minerals can benefit many aspects of health from improving sleep to creating a physical environment not conducive to illness. In the Netflix series, at a time when people around the globe are more closely following the advice of the World Health Organization, it’s recommended that we examine what exactly it is we’re ingesting in the water we drink and the causes those pollutants have on our bodies.
My personal journey of health has been long and curious. Like many of us, I’ve witnessed all too often, people who put themselves last; don’t get adequate rest nor sufficient levels of essential nutrients and the results are discouraging. Further, because the body cannot produce essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and sodium, it’s necessary we get them in the food we eat and the water we drink. According to the World Health Organization, there can actually be some possible adverse consequences to drinking low mineral content water. So, besides starring Efron and producing an exceptionally delicious cup of coffee, I’ve decided when this situation is over, I’m going to continue drinking water that is not only delicious, but good for me.
This pandemic has challenged all of us on some level, but if we can look back at the nuggets of good we’ve extracted, the trace minerals if you will, such as learning new recipes, appreciating time spent with family and friends, not to mention, taking stock of our health – perhaps we can look back at 2020 and also reflect upon the positive takeaways. If you haven’t seen the episode I’m referring to, it’s worth a watch. After all, a natural approach to almost anything is always better.
